Insurance for Food Delivery Drivers

Insurance for delivering food can be more expensive than a traditional personal auto policy, but there are reasons why you must pick the right coverage if you want to stay away from big bills. There are a few different options to choose from when picking auto insurance to cover your vehicle during your food deliveries.

Just having a car puts you at risk, and you must maintain minimum insurance in place, which in some states is required by law. Not abiding by these rules make you exposed to penalties, tickets, and even license suspensions.

A commercial policy is an option for food delivery drivers although it costs more than your personal policy. With this type of policy, you will be covered even if you are in an accident when on a delivery. The rates will be based on your vehicle, driving record, and demographics. Most personal auto insurance policies will not cover any accident or damage that occurs during business use, and you should always inform your insurance company about any business activities you run in your car, so they can give you a clear scope of coverage or lack of, should that be the case.

When you are using your personal vehicle for business, you must have it protected with a business policy if you perform any of the following activities:

  • Deliver food
  • Travel to far-off job sites
  • Haul equipment or work tools
  • Transport people
  • Make sales

If you are making those deliveries on behalf of an established food delivery company, you should explore how their own coverage protects you and whether or not you need more comprehensive protections. You should never assume that you learned how one of them covered you, and think the rest will cover you the same way. Following we highlight some differences:

Amazon Flex/AmazonFresh/Amazon Prime Now. Amazon covers its drivers with $1 million in liability insurance, $1 million in uninsured/underinsured motorists, and $50,000 for comprehensive and collision over what your personal policy covers.

Caviar. Caviar provides drivers with up to $1 million coverage per accident toward medical expenses, a $100,000 accidental death benefit, $100,000 in survivor's benefits, and a $500 weekly benefit for accidental disability.

DoorDash. DoorDash drivers have up to $1 million in liability coverage after your insurance has paid out.

Postmates. According to The Zebra, Postmates provides their drivers $1 million liability above their personal coverage.

UberEATS. Drivers working for UberEATS are provided $1 million in liability coverage, $100,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage.

Everyone Wants to Know When Will the Supply Shortages End?

When will the supply shortages end is a big question right now for everyone. Experts agree in that no one really knows when will it happen, but there are apparent reasons to believe that we will learn to live with it perhaps until 2022 or even longer.

Now that we know all those giant container ships got stuck in the wrong places causing scarcity and a much higher demand for shipping, the natural consequence to all of that is a skyrocketed cost of moving cargo.

If we all remember, everything was going so well on the customer side. We just needed to click, sit back and relax while the items you wanted, just the way you needed them arrive at your doorstep. We were so spoiled!

In the blink of an eye, we had to adjust our lives to a few options of protective gear available during the beginning of a pandemic. Added to the daily circumstances we faced at the supermarket or drugstore, were more important investments like new cars that you would now have to buy on the color or features that are available at the dealership (if you are lucky enough) because that would be better than not having a more reliable car at all.

Anything that is produced or manufactured is now in short supply

As an example, cars use computer chips and the shortages of chips have made it more difficult to produce vehicles. In turn, that has made it harder and more expensive to buy cars.

According to CNBC, the Covid-19 pandemic is not only having a seismic impact on global public health but also causing chaos for the economy, with supply chain disruptions and labor shortages a big problem for businesses around the world. Shifts that have taken place in the labor market are becoming more pronounced, with many people voluntarily quitting roles just as demand for workers rises as economies reopen. Sectors particularly affected by workers quitting their jobs were accommodation and food services, wholesale trade and state and local government education.

Warehouses and logistics managers are facing myriad of challenges, and every movement can be costly. That is why keeping your business assets well protected with adequate insurance solutions will give you the peace of mind you need to focus on putting together all the pieces of this difficult puzzle and find success at the very end.

We know what it takes to keep your business on the road safely and profitably. With some of the best coverages and services in the industry, along with our extensive experience in the transportation industry, we can make it an advantage for you. Is Florida Coming to the Rescue for Container Service and Logistics this Holiday Season?

It is no secret that the regular channels of our supply chain are hugely backlogged, experiencing unprecedented port disruption, putting at risk the timing (and price) of all goods expected to supply this holiday season’s demand, from food to toys, to anything needed to finish the year on a good note after all we’ve been through.

According to CNN, it has been a real nightmare causing computer chip shortages, an epic port congestion, and a serious lack of truck drivers. The world's delicate supply chains are under extreme stress.

Here in the U.S. turns out that the Jacksonville Port Authority has proven to have efficiencies on both land and waterside making them a big part of the solution for big distribution problems. Jacksonville, Florida has a strategic location, labor and terminal operators, facilities and a complete network. Most important of all, Jacksonville does not have container vessels waiting at anchorage, and shippers can easily find two-way river traffic to transit to and from berths.

This whole equation is making Florida more attractive for ocean carriers and shippers. One recent example is Hapag Lloyd which has temporarily rerouted their European container service from the port of Savannah to JAXPORT. This initiative is expected to last at least eight weeks and bring an estimated 1,000 additional TEUs (containers) a week through JAXPORT by mid November. By taking these actions, Hapag Lloyd expects to optimize their service portfolio, stabilize schedules, and adapt to market needs. We are sure many retailers will be taking their hats-off to this important move, not to mention the end recipient: consumers.

According to sources, major infrastructure investments are underway for JAXPORT to support sustained growth. That includes over $200 million in berth and terminal enhancements at the port’s Blount Island Marine Terminal. There is also a federal project to deepen its shipping channel to 47 feet through Blount Island which should be completed by 2022.

As Florida’s premier trucking, delivery, logistics, and courier insurance agency, we understand the demands of your business and how to best protect it from costly risks and liabilities. Being your local leaders in last mile, same day delivery, logistics, and courier insurance, we’ve developed exclusive carrier relationships that enable us to find the best coverage options at the most affordable price to our clients. Long Lines for Your Holiday Shopping?

Orlando, Fla.—Vessels are lining up in ports across America, because imports are pouring into the world’s largest economy for the holiday season.  Inland transportation like trucking and railroads, on the other hand, are dealing with bottlenecks of shipping containers that aren’t being moved fast enough into distribution centers and warehouses. If the ports are a sign of how this year will end, trouble lies ahead for retailers this upcoming holiday season.

An August report from the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates estimated that U.S. container ports would handle 2.37 million twenty-foot containers in August, a 12.6% bump from last year and the highest number of containers imported in one month since 2002. A later report pointed out an increase of 5.1% compared to August of last year. To combat supply shortages, some major retailers have chartered ships to bring in the inventory they need.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Part of the reason is an unsolved issue of labor shortage believed to be enhanced by the pandemic. As COVID-19 resurges in the U.S., preparing for the upcoming holiday season becomes more complex. Retailers are also facing labor shortages and limited inventory capacity. The month of August is  when the peak season typically begins.

  • Retailers are turning to gig economy companies like DoorDash, Instacart, Postmates, and DoorDash to combat the last-mile capacity crunch that has led retailers to turn down volumes of packaging.

  • Retailers and consumers will have to assimilate higher shipping costs. Both UPS and FedEx announced surcharges ahead of the peak shipping season. Even USPS plans to implement surcharges in October, introduce new sorting technology and lease more storage space in preparation for peak season.

  • According to industry experts, high worker bonuses and increased shipping costs overall won't be sustainable in the long term and will soon be due for a market correction.

  • There is no doubt, the supply chain is stressed, strained, shocked, backlogged, and overwhelmed, but it’s not broken. Businesses will continue to be challenged with managing the volatility and the economics of supply and demand.

No matter what your business’ transportation and logistics strategy is one thing is certain— your assets and cargo values must be properly secured and protected against damage or loss. As Florida’s premier delivery, logistics, and courier insurance agency, we understand the demands of your business and how to best protect it from costly risks and liabilities. The Importance Of Logistics Management Insurance

Melbourne, Fla.—Insurance is the most notable form of risk management with a long history. It has been practiced since long before futures markets and other risk management instruments came into being.

The role of freight forwarders and customs brokers has evolved. Changing regulatory frameworks leading to greater exposure to risks and liabilities over the years. The constantly increasing competition and reduced margins, makes it critical to protect the industry from a myriad of exposures which could include liabilities against third parties, loss of or damage to cargo, errors and omissions (including financial penalties imposed by authorities), removal of abandoned cargo and breach of regulations.

Why having the right foundation is critical for any insurance program

When you ship your goods as the ocean or air freight, it’s important to know that they are not automatically insured against loss or damage. To be properly covered, each shipment needs both freight insurance and cargo insurance. That is why it is so important to be aware of the great difference between freight insurance and cargo insurance if your business is engaged in international shipping.

If your business is engaged in the shipping of commercial goods internationally, working knowledge of the International Chamber of Commerce's Incoterms is essential.

Ex Works (EXW): Under this incoterm, the buyer bears the risk and insurance costs from the export customs clearance stage through to receipt of goods

Free On Board (FOB): Here the seller is responsible for risk and cost until the goods are loaded onto the cargo vessel or aircraft. At that point, the risk and cost transfer to the buyer.

Cost, Insurance, and Freight (CIF): In a sale transacted under the CIF incoterm, the seller accepts risk up to the point the goods are loaded onto the cargo vessel or aircraft. The seller also pays the cost of insurance until the goods reach the port of discharge. The buyer shares the cost at the port of discharge and has sole responsibility for cost and risk from then onwards.

At Florida Transportation Insurance, a subsidiary of Garzor Insurance, our agents with a deep understanding of the courier and delivery industry enable us to design risk strategies that protect and serve all areas of your business, including the most specialized. Is Cybercrime The Next Pandemic As They Say?

Orlando, Fla.—No one wants to talk about it, but it’s inevitable, the transportation industry, where a lot of money changes hands every second, is becoming a big target for cybercriminals. Apparently, COVID-19 isn’t the only pandemic the world will face this decade.

In 2020, there were 1,108 data breaches, down 19 percent from 1,362 breaches in 2019, according to the ITRC’s 2020 End-of Year Data Breach Report. There was also a significant decrease in the number of individuals impacted. In 2020, 300.6 million people were impacted by data breaches, down 66 percent from 887.3 million people impacted in 2019. Cyberattacks were the most used cause of compromise, accounting for 878 events that affected 170 million individuals. One form of cyberattacks, using emails (phishing) or texts (smishing) supposedly from a reputable company that induces people to supply personal information, was the most used method of cyberattack,  accounting for 44 percent of all cyberattacks.

Ransomware accounted for 18 percent of cyberattacks and malware accounted for 12 percent. Human and system errors accounted for caused 152 events that affected 130 million people. Physical attacks, such as stealing a device or document, accounted for 78 events and affected about 943,000 people. Supply chain attacks, which originate with a vendor, account for the remainder of attacks.

The May 7 (2021) ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline Co., which supplies 45% of the East Coast’s fuel, is one of the latest examples of a cyberattack’s power. The breach forced the company to shut down its four main pipelines between Texas and New Jersey, leading to fuel market concerns. Now we learned the transportation industry has become a high-value target for cybercriminals who gain access to fleets’ IT system to install ransomware.

How hackers use ransomware is evolving, now cybercriminals are taking more of a “shotgun” approach where they don’t have a specific target. The goal is to get the malware on as many networks and machines as possible. Once the hackers have access to a network, they decide when to activate the ransomware. According to industry sources and specialists, businesses without good data backup plans are most susceptible to being held at ransom.

Experts advise that more than 90% of cybersecurity problems originate from human error, according, a firm that offers cybersecurity education and training for businesses. Companies that don’t tighten up their cybersecurity, make changes, or learn from the past are the companies most likely to get attacked multiple times. The most common risk to fleets right now is employees clicking on the wrong links in emails that look legitimate but lead to corrupted websites that downloads some sort of malware. Companies need to understand the importance of training their drivers, not just the office staff. Drivers may not be using the systems directly, but they are certainly talking or sending messages back and forth to the people who are using your system, which puts them at risk as well and possibly becoming the weakest link in your chain of protection.

We know what it takes to keep your business on the road safely and profitably. Last Mile Autonomous Vehicle Technology Is Here To Stay

Orlando, Fla.—This is not just the latest craze. Although most of this technology was in progress, planned and in the books already years ago, this past year and a half made it clear that the time to move into new ways and new technology is now, just as we were forced to work and learn via Zoom. In a time when delivery became almost as important, or maybe more, than having a physical shopping experience, autonomous delivery startups have made their big moves in order to keep up with demand.

Companies like Nuro, the autonomous delivery startup founded in 2016 by former Google engineers Dave Ferguson and Jiajun Zhu, are expanding into parcel logistics, in Nuro’s case, through a partnership with FedEx. The deal with FedEx marks its first step into parcels logistics. The pilot program has already started in Houston, Texas. This multiyear commitment will allow Nuro to bring its technology to more people in new ways, and eventually reach large-scale deployment. Nuro has partnered with CVS, Domino’s and Kroger, as examples. They have always focused its efforts on designing a low-speed electric self-driving vehicle that transports packages, not people. But the operation needs to be more centered on the delivery of groceries, food and even medical supplies.

FedEx has been working internally on its own autonomous sidewalk delivery bot. The idea was for FedEx to provide a way for retailers to accept orders from nearby customers and deliver them by bot directly to customers’ homes or businesses the same day. They revealed to have intentions to work with AutoZone, Lowe’s, Pizza Hut, Target, Walgreens, and Walmart. Their bots have been tested in Memphis, Tennessee; in Plano and Frisco, Texas and Manchester, New Hampshire.

With this new partnership with Nuro, FedEx has made a long-term commitment to use their autonomous bots for last-mile delivery at large scale.

Florida Remains The Focal Point on High Speed Rail Efforts

Orlando, Fla.—The current administration hopes to revive a federally funded high-speed rail line from Tampa to Orlando promised eleven years ago by then President Obama. Now the Biden administration hopes to revive those stalled rail projects and the Sunshine State remains a focal point of those efforts. The federal government would provide the financial support and expertise to help make those local visions a reality, learning from past mistakes. Former Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said that approach may prove to be more effective. But that approach will take time. This administration’s plan prioritizes repairing the country’s existing infrastructure, building 500 electric vehicle charging stations nationwide and a $400 billion investment in home and community health care for older and disabled Americans.

Even without federal investment, since we all know, there has been progress in Florida in bringing high-speed trains online. In 2018, Brightline launched the first privately operated high-speed rail line in the country linking Miami and Wast Palm Beach. The company recently passed the halfway point on construction to bring service between South Florida and Orlando. It’s scheduled for completion at the end of 2022.

Brightline remains in negotiations with the Florida Department of Transportation to extend its line from Orlando to Tampa. But Brightline also has faced lawsuits from governments along the Treasure Coast whose leaders expressed concerns about the safety record of the rail company and unexpected costs to taxpayers to pay for safety enhancements at county-owned crossings.

We’ll know the conclusion soon, since the two sides have until July 31, 2021 to reach a lease agreement on the state-owned right-of-way between the two cities.

According to USHRR, high speed rail creates millions of jobs across many different fields including construction, engineering, manufacturing, real estate development, plus operations and management of the new system. It is also considered the single largest climate solution that can decarbonize the majority of our entire national transportation network, and can be scaled up quickly by making the project a top national priority.

The new Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg, said in a recent MSNBC interview that he wants the U.S. "to be leading the world when it comes to access to high-speed rail.”

High speed rail offers a super efficient, electrically-powered, light freight shipping system infrastructure in combination with its high level passenger transport. Light freight includes everything transported by FedEx, UPS, Amazon, USPS, etc. - mostly in long distance trucks and/or airplanes. (Not to be confused with "heavy freight" like lumber, oil, coal, etc. transported by the big rail freight operators like BNSF, CSX, etc).

Work Zone Safety For Large Trucks

Orlando, Fla.—This year’s National Work Zone Awareness Week, which highlights safety as the roadway construction season commences, just happened now on April 26-30. In support of the National Work Zone Awareness Week, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is encouraging drivers of large trucks to use extra caution, and is urging all drivers to remain alert, obey traffic signs and allow all vehicles extra space.

In Florida, there were 68 work zone fatalities in 2019, according to the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, a project of the American Road and Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation. In Texas, on the other hand, according to their local DOT, there were more than 22,000 traffic crashes in work zones in 2020. Their system of interstate mileage is relied on by truck drivers serving its agriculture and energy industries. Georgia is also a busy state for freight movement, due to their many corporate distribution centers and inland and coastal ports. Crashes in Georgia work zones resulted in 5,123 injuries and 24 fatalities in 2020, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration plans to focus its safety awareness efforts on these three states which are the ones that experience high rates of work zone crashes involving large trucks: Florida, Georgia and Texas. According to FMCSA, drivers in these states can expect to hear public service announcements and see safety messaging on billboards as they near work zones.

The Logistics Industry, And Its Ability To Overcome Adversity

Orlando, Fla.—During the lockdown period, when the world briefly stopped, companies sold out of goods and could no longer import more, and truck drivers had to stop delivering goods of all kinds. But the industry was able to make it through, and transportation and logistics have come out more vital than ever.

As we all know, the E-commerce market is growing, and the logistics industry needs to be there to support it.

Transportation and logistics companies strengthen the United States job market, and the industry also brings in trillions of dollars a year to our country. According to industry sources, some estimate that it makes up 10% of the American GDP and 12% of the world’s GDP. And the numbers will only keep rising within the next few years. In 2018, the global market was worth an estimated $9.6 trillion and is expected to rise to $15 trillion by 2023. With global industry numbers continuing to rise by 2023, it is exciting to see how big the trucking industry in the U.S. will grow during that same period.

Logistics is big business in Florida, where the broader wholesale trade, transportation and logistics industry employs more than half a million Floridians. Florida offers a prime location for value added logistics services, as well as a skilled multilingual workforce and competitive overall business costs. Firms benefit from Florida’s multimodal transportation system, foreign trade zones and other competitive advantages.

Also, with 20+ military bases, 3 unified combatant commands, and all major DoD contractors present in Florida, the state offers opportunities for provisioning equipment and parts, as well as other services to the nation’s military and space assets. That amongst many other business opportunities, just here in Florida!

For us at Florida Transportation Insurance, as Florida’s premier delivery, logistics, and courier insurance agency, we understand the demands of your business and how to best protect it from costly risks and liabilities.

With over ten years in the Central Florida transportation insurance industry, our staff and agents, have the knowledge to help protect your drivers and public auto businesses.
